Earthrise is the name of the iconic photograph of the jeweled ball of Earth rising from darkness, taken from Apollo 8 as the spacecraft orbited the moon.

Earthrise is the name of a composition written by Jake Heggie for musical saw and string quartet, commissioned by the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival for its 20th Anniversary, to be performed in a World Premiere August 18th on Lopez Island by Anita Orne, musical saw, and the Miro Quartet. Jake Heggie is well known as composer of the operas Moby Dick and Dead Man Walking.

Earthrise honors William Anders, Apollo 8 astronaut and photographer, resident of Orcas Island and with his foundation a supporter of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival and its outreach to Lopez Island.

In addition to the World Premiere, the Lopez Concert will feature 15 exquisite chamber musicians from the world's concert halls. They will offer the music of Bela Bartok, Franz Schubert, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The musicians include many who have performed on Lopez in past Chamber Music concerts and many exciting young musicians new to the Lopez audience: Benjamin Beilman, violin; Jose Franch-Ballester, clarinet; Jeffrey Kahane, piano; Jon Kimura Parker, piano; Anita Orne, saw; Daniel Ching, violin; William Fedkenheuer, violin; John Largess, viola; Joshua Gindele, cello; Martin Chalifour, violin; Chee-Yun, violin; Aloysia Friedman, viola; David Harding, viola; Desmond Hoebig, cello; Oliver Aldort, cello; and the fibre artistry of Geoffrey Shilling.

A reception to meet the artists will follow the concert at Lopez Center, sponsored by John and Susan Pohl. Earlier the same day, an informative and lively music lovers brunch called Know the Score will be presented at Port Stanley Schoolhouse by Melinda Bargreen (separately ticketed), sponsored by Bill and Kathie Kreager. Please consider joining the Artist Sponsor Circle to help underwrite the performance of these greatly admired musicians on Lopez Island; contact Micki Ryan, concert coordinator at lopez@oicmf.org or 468-4442 for sponsor information.
