Symba and the Lobster - Free Children's Concert
Monday August 11, 2025, noon
Admission
Free
Lobsters on Lopez? You bet - in the delightful musical tale of Symba and the Lobster, offered to Lopez families and children, especially those from pre-school to 5th grade. This performance is free, presented outdoors at the Lopez Center Pavilion August 11 at noon. Bring a picnic blanket and your lunch, and enjoy the musical adventures of Symba and his friend - and home - the lobster.

Wait - who is Symba, and why does he call this large and friendly lobster his home? Symba is a teeny-tiny ocean dwelling creature whose whole name is Symbion Pandora, and he makes his home on the lobster's whiskers where he eats the lobster's leftovers! Have you ever heard of such a thing?

On the Lopez outdoor stage, Symba's voice is the sweet violin of composer and author Nanki Chugh, while the lobster speaks through the clear oboe of Anne Pinkerton. The story is narrated by Sophie Parker, who also designed and created the costumes for Symba and his buddy. All three young women are part of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival on Lopez. Their presentation will include interactive outreach to the younger set in the audience, and a bit of ocean science to their older siblings and parents. Water and light refreshments will be available free for audience members. Rest rooms inside Lopez Center will be open, accessible from the side door facing the outdoor pavilion and stage.

Come join us at Noon on Monday, August 11, and share your lunch (or not) with hungry Symba - he doesn't eat much, really! Come in an ocean related mask or costume if you like! This children's concert is the first one offered by the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival on Lopez, after 14 years of highly applauded chamber music concerts inside Lopez Center. The children's concert is sponsored by The Driftwood Fund, Mary Bywater Cross, Constance Euerle, and Ilene and Irv Bernstein. The Festival's main concert is still happening also on August 11; it is ticketed and begins inside Lopez Center at 3 PM.
